Looks like it's catch up time around here! Last month, as per tradition, all of the first grade classes at Crestwood were invited to Nancy Meade's home in the Highlands neighborhood to do some cider pressing by hand. First, the kids picked out apples and washed them in a weak bleach solution. Then the apples were plopped into the grinder part of the press. Everyone had several opportunities to turn the crank to crush the apples. It took some muscle! Then it was time to squeeze every last bit of juice out of those apples using the giant drill-like tool and the wooden press. Then everyone enjoyed fresh cider and doughnut holes before walking through Mrs. Meade's beautiful hummingbird garden on the way back to Crestwood. Here are some more pictures of the parts of the cider press. Can you guess what each part is for??
