Right now in Madison, you can't help but notice the leaves turning brilliant colors before falling like snow onto the ground. What a perfect opportunity for an outdoor science lesson! This afternoon, students from Mr. Moyer's KG class collected leaves from the woods and all around the school. A parent volunteer took groups of 2-4 kids at a time to walk through the woodland paths and visit the trees in the front of the school, where they picked up as many different shapes and sizes and colors of leaves that they could find. Their enthusiasm was irrepressible, and the children couldn't help but run through the paths and roll in the leaves and shout about all the colors they found. The leaves are being pressed in layers of newspaper between two plywood boards, and next week, the class will dip them in melted wax for preservation and learn to identify the different kinds.
