LOVE MADISON WORK DAY
THIS SUNDAY, MAY 4
9-3
SEE YOU THERE!
I'm not going to lie. Lately the weather around here gets a BIG THUMBS DOWN. Rain, and more rain, and temperatures chilly enough to warrant winter jackets and wool hats. Plans for woods walks and cool weather planting have been thwarted by rain. And remember those 1200+ peas we planted with the fourth graders last month (posted here and here)? They are finally coming up, but just barely, and they're not growing very fast.
The garden committee had a whole day of salad planting (spinach, lettuce, radishes) scheduled with most of the kindergarten and first grade classes, but we decided to cancel when we saw rain and temps in the 40s in the forecast. Sure, the local farmers are wasting no time getting those cool weather crops in the ground, but when you're trying to instill a love of the outdoors and introduce children to the idea of growing their own food, it's probably best not to start out on a day that is cold and wet and miserable. We're going to try for next week.
(See our garden plot, all ready for planting? The garden committee had some extra help from Chris M. and Silke S. last week clearing the plot, spreading mulch, and setting up the paths so kids won't have to walk in the mud. Thanks so much, guys!)
