Somewhere under all that snow and ice and months' worth of boot tracks and snow angels, somewhere under there is dirt and grass and the promise of spring. In November, we planted garlic and flower bulbs in the bulb circle. Now, just a few months later, I'm thinking about when those determined little crocuses will push their green shoots up through the ground and (probably) snow. I'm looking forward to the cheery daffodils and tulips that follow. I'm wondering if the garlic will have survived this brutal winter. Only time will tell! Look at the photo to the left and imagine cucumber vines crawling up those wooden trellises, now so bare and cold and lonely. Imagine a small field of snap peas for the children of Crestwood to snack on as the school year wraps up this June. Imagine all that good, clean dirt and how much there is to learn from growing things in it. Now imagine 400 Crestwood students, each with a shovel in hand or a cluster of seeds pinched between fingertips, or poised with a watering can over a newly planted tomato seedling. Isn't that an exciting thought?! As we ramp up for spring planting, the garden committee is collecting garden supplies and recruiting volunteers. Supplies needed include: potting soil, flower and vegetable seeds, peat pots, planting trays, tall stakes/poles for trellising, blood meal (for amending the soil). If you have any items to donate and/or would like to volunteer to help with indoor and outdoor planting in April and May, please contact your child's classroom teacher or call Karen Lenoch at 204-1130.
