Students in Ms. Handa's fourth grade class read the book How Many Seeds in a Pumpkin? by Margaret McNamara. Each learning group then made scientific observations and measurements of their own pumpkins. This included predictions about how many seeds their pumpkin might contain. After cutting the pumpkins open and cleaning out the seeds, students counted seeds and compared the actual number to their predictions. A tasty ending to the morning was making pumpkin smoothies on the bike blender using the roasted pumpkin!

Welcome to the Crestwood Elementary Outdoor Education (OE) blog! It is here that we will document the outdoor happenings at Crestwood Elementary School, as well as solicit ideas and comments from staff, parents, and the Crestwood community.
We are lucky to have a variety of outdoor spaces at Crestwood in which children can be engaged in active learning. Students help plant and maintain garden plots, woods and an apple orchard, all on the school grounds. Additionally, classes take walking field trips to nearby conservation parks and the farmers market. So many learning activities have already taken place this fall that there is already a backlog of potential blog posts waiting to be written and posted here! A big reason we've started a blog for OE is to keep in touch with parent volunteers and the broader Crestwood community. So much learning happens in Crestwood's outdoor spaces that it's hard to keep track of it all, and we hope that this website will help foster communication between the staff and community of volunteers who help make outdoor learning happen. Here are a few things you may want to know about this website: 1) The website is public. Anyone may view its contents and comments. For reasons of security and confidentiality, we have chosen not to show faces or clearly identifying features of any of the Crestwood students in our photos. Any adults featured in photographs have given their permission to have their pictures posted. 2) Comments are moderated to filter spam and internet trolls. 3) This website is run entirely by volunteers. We will do our best to approve comments and update the site and blog in a timely manner. Thanks for visiting! |
