What a beautiful day it was for an outdoor workday! It was wonderful seeing so many volunteers of all ages weeding, digging, hauling, and raking to clean up the school grounds in anticipation of Earth Week and all the spring activities we have planned. Crestwood parents and arborists Joe House and Garrett Hughes took down a couple of dead trees that are rotted through and were threatening to fall. Lots of people worked on cleaning out the back garden and spreading the enormous pile of wood chips. There were jobs for all ages here, from shoveling mulch to loosening the garden soil! That garden looks ready for salad planting any day! The front gardens are cleaned up and ready for planting, too. Our new Gardener-in-Residence, Krysta Post, was there to help, too! See the pile of brush and dried stalks on the left picture? We pulled that out of the prairie garden to make room for new growth. Because of the trees coming down, it wasn't safe to be in the woods most of the day, but Linda Gourley did manage to dig up some ephemerals in the Goldfinch plot to redistribute as part of our woods restoration project. All in all, I would say the workday was a success. Welcome, spring!
